In 1978 All Saints Gardening Club of Lightwater, started and the dozen or so members met in the small room at the Church Hall. Regular meetings with talks from guest speakers encouraged new members and in 1979 the Club put on its first show.
In recent years Club activities and membership have expanded and the normal attendance at each monthly meeting is about 50 people. Illustrated talks are given and the "gardening" theme is used to encompass wine-making, use of herbs etc. There is a raffle, plant stall and Video Library each month.
In addition there is a Flower of the Month competition aimed to prove that for each month of the year there is a flower that can be grown in the garden. The visiting speaker judges each entry and the points totaled at the end of the year - the winner getting a prize ( a Cut Glass Engraved Vase) at the AGM.
We try to have one visit a year in which we gives members a disscount and have been to Wisley, Savill Gardens and Exbury Gardens to name a few.
In 1986 the Club staged its first Spring Show, an unlucky year for a debut given a very cold winter, but there were enough exhibits for the judge to consider and the useful information given about presentation resulted in an improvement in quality, staging and numbers for the 1987 show, the quality of the show and exhibits has continued to improve on each successive year.
The standard of the autumn show has also improved, and the sight of a hall full of flowers, fruit, vegetables, cakes, jams, craft and flower arrangements, is a wonderful spectacle. Several cups and trophies are awarded. The Chairman of the Parish Council normally makes the presentations.
The Club has an arrangement with Camberley Horticultural Society Trading Shop so our members can receive a discount on goods purchased. Members are also entitled to a 25% discount on all seed orders made annually.
The Club is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society, Surrey Horticultural Federation and The Daffodil society. We won places in the affiliated Societies ballot for the window box and hanging basket competitions at Chelsea Flower Show and more recently the Hampton Court Flower show. On our first attempt won the highest award - the silver Grenfell medal, our greatest achievement to date. We have also won Bronze and last Year (2008) a silver Gilt
We compete in the Surrey Horticultural Federation's Shows against such gardening club giants as Surbiton, Shalford and Albury. The Club is now regularly achieving first, second and third prize placing.
What will we do next? Why not join us and find out. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in St John the Baptists Church, Windlesham from 8 to 10 pm
