The Gardening Club were successful at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2010 in winning a Gold Grenfell Medal and the Best Inspiring Space Award with their exhibit titled "Tales From The River Bank", designed by Carolyn Barrow. The Inspiring Spaces category calls for container planting within a 2 meter cube and should be designed to provide inspiration to gardeners who have an awkward corner to plant. This years exhibit is built on and around a riverside jetty that is approached from a field. Chalk land turf borders one side of the exhibit and a little stream planted with water loving plants provides interest down one of the other sides. The Long Water at Hampton Court is "The River" which illustrates making use of the immediate surrounds to enhance the planting area. The jetty handrails support window boxes and a broken flag pole that in turn supports a hanging basket, and this gives the height to the exhibit. On the jetty there is a fishing creel, picnic basket with a thermos flask, an old watering can, a kettle planted with mint (for that Pims!), a tyre and a little pond with miniature water lilies. All these containers are planted with grasses, rushes, honesuckle, cosmos, Achillea, Hostas etc. in all over 300 plants were used. Old nylons filled with soil and shaped into large pebbles and rocks are planted with Mind Your Own Business and Creeping Jenny and are used to disguise the mechanics and containers used to create this exhibit. This neat trick was the invention of one of the members. In all some 12 members of the club were involved in either watering and caring of the plants, providing the raw materials and containers and helping in the construction of the exhibit at Hampton Court Jim Buttress, the head judge commented "The attention to detail, the passion that has obviously gone into the construction and the fact that everywhere that you looked there was something of interest to see makes this a worthy winner of the Best Inspiring Space".

Hardy Plant Propagation by Geoff Yates

We were promised a fun evening by Geoff Yates and that is exactly what we had. He showed us how to propagate some hardy perennials in several unusual ways using his sharp knife.

A clump of hardy Geraniums was chopped down, roots trimmed and divided into about twenty small plants. These could then be planted in a season.

A Bergenia Rhizone was sliced up into inch thick rings and planted out in a small tray of compost half covered by compost (like and egg in an egg cup), watered and covered with thin polythene and placed under a greenhouse bench. In about 18 months they will have flown into good strong plants. Flag Irises can be treated the same way.

An ornamental fern (Poly Stichum Plumosum Divisitobium) was cut off and pegged down in a small tray of compost with garden wine (hair Grips), watered and covered with thin polythene and placed under greenhouse bench. In a year on so a tiny forest of new ferns will have been produced which can then be detached and planted our. That will save pounds!

Hostas can be chopped up into really tiny pieces each with an ‘eye’ planted in small tray of compost watered and covered with thin polythene and placed under greenhouse bench. It takes about eighteen months to produce small plants.

The most amazing treatments was meted out to the hardy Lobelias – stem was cut above and below a pain of leaves and then the stem was sliced half vertically so that each cutting had one leaf and half a stem. The new bud is in the axle – this is a job for the summer, cuttings were planted in a tray of compost waterproof covered and put under greenhouse bench.

Geoff popped a leaf from a shepherds purse in a mouth and chewed it up – belonging to the watercress family it apparently had a peppery taste!

Aubretias can be propagated by knotting plants can be pulled up and divided, at any time of the year, (roots are long and straggly) and the roots are bound round and round and planted out in a spare patch of vegetable garden.

Lily stems were cut into suitable lengths and laid in a seed tray, watered and covered with thin polythene. Mature Lilies and Hostas can be watered with a systemic insecticide PROVADO which apparently deters slugs, snails and lily beetle – that is reassuring news. I’ll try that along with the vaseline, crushed seashells and (dishes of water for Hostas).

A most interesting and enjoyable evening I can’t wait to get started with my penknife.
